PEOPLE, Page 99Bench MarkBy Emily Mitchell/Reported by Wendy Cole
Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall "just never liked"
using the word black to describe his race. After writing
"Afro-American" in a dissent last week, he'll use that term from
now on. Whether the other Justices follow his lead isn't his
concern: "It's like what the old lady said when she kissed the cow
-- everyone to his own liking." Jesse Jackson, who got the ball
rolling last year by suggesting an alternative for black, applauded
the choice, though he'd prefer "African American" because "Afro is
sometimes reduced to a hairstyle." Marshall cited a source for his
decision: "Afro-American is in the dictionary, and the other one
isn't." Judicious.
